I believe you need to be unique and have some characters if you want to be 'popular', especially when we are talking about coffee shop in Jakarta. Woodpecker Coffee is relatively new in Jakarta coffee scene. This coffee shop joins an array of coffee shops that already exist in Jakarta trying to satisfy all coffee lovers out there.

Trafique Coffee

Daily cup of coffee has become an unmissable lifestyle especially in this metropolitan city. It's like they have a ritual : go to a coffee shop, get one cup and take a sip (don't forget to take photos and upload it to Instagram) in order to be 'accepted by the society'. But whatever your purpose is, coffee is really nice to enjoy actually. I think my opinion just now is backed by many new coffee shops start brewing in Jakarta. Trafique Coffee is one new addition in this crowded Jakarta, in Kebayoran Baru to be precise.
The place should be easily found and recognized by its all-white brick painting, there's also an arrow sign just beside the street pointing to the place. Yet a logo/name sign would be easier to be found.

Hong Tang Central Park

Hello there! Finally I'm back to write a post again after one month out. Wondering what will I review in this post? You must be know it already, Hong Tang. This is a well-known dessert shop in Jakarta. After facing the craziness and hectic life in Jakarta, this would be a nice (and sweet) relief to have. This Taiwanese dessert brand opened a new branch in Central Park earlier this year. This outlet has become a public favorite since its opening and queueing line is likely to be seen. The place isn't too big with some tables on the foyer and with typical red Asian decoration posted in.
I did go into the waiting list but for just a moment, the place wasn't that full either, considering it was Saturday night.
With nothing to wait, I started to order some sweet desserts.

Popolamama Indonesia

Popolamama Indonesia, a new brand in the food industry. Originally from Japan, it mixes Japanese custom art & perfection and the art of Italian pasta making. The pasta here uses 100% Durum wheat ground onto Semolina flour. The branch in Taman Anggrek uses classic Italian decoration outside, minimalistic Italian inside. The lighting here was quite dim, a gentle note to be extra careful while taking photos/pictures :).
Now, let's move on to the dishes. I got complete set of appetizer, main course and dessert. I'm gonna reveal them one by one, here we go!

Djournal Coffee Puri Indah Mall

Hello, thank you for visiting The Foodglasses blog :).

We are still in the high hype of World Cup 2014. As the tournament approaches into the last 16, there are some (or many?) surprises. First, the reigning champion, Spain - one of my favorite - crashed out after the first two group matches. That was a shocker for everyone. In group D, group of death which consists of three former world champions, England, Italy, Uruguay and underdog Costa Rica. But who would predict Costa Rica will top this group? England and Italy bow out from the tournament, meanwhile Luis Suarez gets his hattrick of biting after he did it again to Italy's Giorgio Chiellini. Suarez will obviously become the main talk in a few days ahead.
I'm rooting the Germans to shine in this World Cup. How about you?

My hype for coffee and coffee shop right now is as high as my hype for this year World Cup. Enjoying quality time at coffee shop and take a sip from a cup of coffee, just a perfect combination. So this time, I went out to spend my night at this coffee shop in Puri Indah Mall. Yes, it is Djournal Coffee. Djournal Coffee isn't as mainstream as the other coffee shop inside the mall for me. I did enjoy my 'hipster time' here :)). Really love the ambiance here at night plus the classic western design made the place very comfy. This branch is really suitable for a group hangout, a personal chit chat or even for business meeting (I would love to do it here sometime!). For the meal and drink, I didn't take much since I was very full after dinner. I picked light bites and sweet drink to accompany my time at Djournal.

Nutella Blast (IDR 45k)
So the first that I had was Nutella Blast. No coffee from a coffee shop seems weird, huh? No, not at all! It depends on the occasion, I just wanted something easy so I took the Nutella Blast. The drink tasted more like Ferrero Rocher rather than Nutella, although I could still taste the Nutella flavor. It also contained some nuts. Drizzled with some chocolate sauce at the side. Yummy yum yum! :))

Chicken Teriyaki Wrap (IDR 43k)
Two wraps of chicken fillet coated with teriyaki sauce completed with fries. Kind of perfect snack for me. The chicken was a bit hard but inside it was still good, just a fraction off. They came in big chunks woohoo!  The teriyaki sauce was perfect for this wrap, sweet and tasty. How about the fries? They were also okay, sprinkled with sesame seed, pretty much enjoyable along with the wraps. Djournal's Chicken Teriyaki Wrap served on a wooden tray, nice!

Love my outing to Djournal Coffee this time.
See you on my next post! Haha *cheers*

Ichiro Pesanggrahan

Hi there guys!
It's been a while since my last post, I had to do something else that is more important. Now, it's time to catch up with another food review again :p.

So, I visited Pesanggrahan area where I could find array of restaurants at night along the street. I opted to try the relatively new restaurant, Ichiro. Ichiro is a family Japanese restaurant. In one restaurant, they have three brands/types of food, including Indonesian cuisine named Republic and also Mame Do. I guess they are all in one owner group. But Ichiro was the most attractive for me so I tried it. The restaurant itself have a fair space with an authentic and simple decoration inside and outside. They are creating a different atmosphere on each side of the restaurant.

Ichiro's main selling is their ramen along with sushi and other side dishes. The ramen - with chicken or pork options - has three different types of ramen, they are original, special and unique. The unique one is a combination between the standard Japanese and other types of dressing/seasoning/topping. The special is stronger in flavor and has a thicker broth or soup.
And here are what I got and my pick :

SPOILER : THIS IS NON-HALAL

Kuro (IDR 54k)
Ramen with typical Nagi pork broth. In each menu of ramen, you can pick the noodle type (soft, normal, hard), spiciness level and add extra topping. For this Kuro I chose normal noodle and also normal level of spiciness. At the first view, I was stunned by the pork meat (I was drooling :o). Yep, the pork was roasted, very crispy and came in generous size! The taste was absolutely great! I could still taste the sweet flavor as well. The egg was a little bit runny, I really like it. The noodle was soft and had a chewy texture. The broth was actually too strong although I had requested the normal level. They even gave an extra chili paste which I didn't take. But the Nagi pork broth still got a clear taste of sweet pork meat.

Genkio (IDR 54k)
Ramen with Japanese curry. Traditional and classic one. I had soft noodle with normal spiciness level in the ramen. The roasted pork and the egg were as good as the Kuro's. Instead of chili paste, they put curry powder on the ramen for Genkio. The soft noodle wasn't too different with the normal one. The curry tasted really nice however it was still too strong.

Spicy Karage with Akao Sauce (IDR 32k)
One side dish to complete the meal, I planned to try their sushi roll but I was full at that time so this karage was enough. Another spicy dish that I had (I didn't thought the ramens would be that spicy at first) as the karage sprinkled with black pepper seasoning. The karage meat was quite tender and the Akao sauce was pretty nice actually. The mix between spicy and sweet flavors from the sauce was imprinted well on my taste buds. Me like it :D

Iced Green Tea

The dishes here were actually pretty nice and would be better if they weren't too spicy. If you like that kind of spicy ramen, this might be one of the option to try. The service was a bit lame and annoying as the waitress looked a bit clueless there. Well, I was okay with that actually, not a big deal after all haha.
I think Ichiro is a quite decent ramen house but still not the best ramen in town though ;).

Jakarta Culinary Passport 2.0

Hi dearest readers! Welcome to my blog :).

This time I'll cover the latest culinary event in Jakarta. You guys must be already know it, yes it's JAKARTA CULINARY PASSPORT. This most anticipated event by foodies in Jakarta is back on 5-8 June 2014 . It was the second edition of this event and organized by The Alphabet Project. Located at Grand Indonesia, this food festival was a hit and a must visit.
Jakarta Culinary Passport 2.0 took a theme "Time Across The Foodniverse" and more than 60 tenants were divided into four period of time to satisfy your appetite. This year, Jakarta Culinary Passport offered an experience of a time traveler.

The enthusiasm from people was really high for this event, it was proven by the number of people visited the event. Many tenants were sold out each day as another evidence. Lots of public figures were also there.
Now, let's talk about this year's concept. Divided the hall into four sections (period of time), the first was 20's - 50's, the second one was 60's - 80's, the third was 90's - 00's and the last but not least Future.
  • 20's - 50's : reliving the atmosphere of Indonesia tempo doeloe.
  • 60's - 80's : Asia's delicacies and all time favorite American dishes with retro atmosphere.
  • 90's - 00's : modern western cuisines with mouthwatering selection.
  • Future : DESSERTS with futuristic ambience!
I'm gonna share my story based on the time period to make it easier and more structured. Let's start the time adventure of my taste bud from the 'oldest' period :p.
20's - 50's

Dapur Solo
The authentic food from Solo by Ny. Swan was here in Jakarta Culinary Passport. This was the first tenant that I tried. Dapur Solo has lunch box set, including Nasi Langgi, Nasi Urap, Nasi Gudeg and Nasi Pecel complete with the side dishes, sambal and crackers. I didn't try the lunch box though, but I tried their Selat Solo, I asked them whether is was available or not because it was 'unseen'. Selat Solo consists of beef, boiled egg, carrot, beans, tomato and potato, then poured with sweet and tasty broth. I like the Selat Solo, especially the broth, the sweetness was perfect although not as tasty as I thought before but that was acceptable.

Suntiang
Suntiang was pretty unique. It combines West Sumatra strong flavor with Japanese delicacy.
Tried their favorite, Rendang Cheese Roll (so creative haha...). I love the crunchy roll, but the cheese and mayo were  a bit too strong in taste, hence rendang taste almost disappeared. Overall, I still love the dish and a big appreciation for this creative combination! :D

60's - 80's

Karokun Yakitori
This tenant most probably the most crowded and the most demanded, you barely could see an empty line in front of the stand. Karokun always had a long queue, especially in weekend! I'm not gonna write much about Karokun since I've done it before on my previous post. But again I should say their yakitori was simple awesome!

Taco Bao
Again another fusion, this time Mexican meets Taiwanese food. As you can see from the name, it's a combiantion between taco and bao dishes. Instead of tortilla to wrap the fillings, they used fluffy bao. Tried their The Luchador and The Shaolin only for IDR 25k! (I did a favor to post on Instagram about their dishes to get special promo). The Luchador was bao filled with minced beef and The Shaolin was bao filled with chicken meat, and all with lettuce and chives. Plus we had nachos to add Mexican feeling. The beef and chicken were nice and the bao - their uniqueness - was silky and smooth. Love it!

Jerry's 1987
Another favorite pick! You should try this fusion milkshake! Rather than having a boring plain milkshake, Jerry's 1987 offers milkshake blended with assorted ingredients, like biscuits, chocolate, cereal and many more. I opted to try their Clippers, strawberry milkshake with Ferrero Rocher. One glass of Clippers was labeled IDR 40k, a bit pricy hmm... But I fell in love with this exquisite drink! Strawberry and Ferrero Rocher were blended nicely, I could taste the light strawberry taste and smooth Ferrero Rocher texture. The level of sweetness was great and this drink was very refreshing.
Their Royale (Regal + Snickers) was also nice, should try it next time!

90's - 00's

I didn't try much at this section, in fact I only tried one not because this 90's - 00's wasn't good or something but I preferred to explore the other three.

Churros La Fonda
Having a hard time to decide which snack to pick? Churros could be the answer. This original Spanish churros is great for simple and light snack. Churros La Fonda is a brand from Bali that combines the original Spanish churros with street food concept. I chose cinnamon topping and white chocolate sauce. It was YUMMY! and the churros were also fresh! :)

FUTURE

Dessert is the future, the future is dessert :p.

Milky Way
What a lovely color they have! I didn't try it though, but I'm sure this milk pudding was great. Love their cute packaging :3. They also have Caramelized Milk, seems so yum :9.

Dolci
Life is sweet. Yes, it is. It's Dolci's tagline and I just couldn't agree more. Dolci offers homemade pie and fruit dessert in a jar. Bought home their Apple Crumble, one of the fruit desserts. The apple pieces were mixed with almond and resulted a good sweet taste. If you love apple products, you should try this one hehe.

Passionnee
When you talk about dessert, you shouldn't forget about French bakery and pastry. Yes, Passionnee offers the luxury of French bakery and pastry. I had a slice of Apple Pie, it was good. The pie was soft and glazy, the apple taste was comforting my taste buds. The crust, a bit crunchy in texture. Just one perfect slice of apple pie <3.

Puyo Desserts
This phenomenal dessert was again people's favorite (mine too!). This silky dessert was also never lacked of customers. Check out the review on my previous post.

Kelasi
If Karokun had a long queuing line on 60's - 80's side, then on the other side Kelasi also had their long queuing line. Their simply yet innovative dessert simply stole many people's attention. Kelasi also has been covered on my previous post.
Twitter : kelasi_ID
Instagram : kelasi_id

Those are the tenants that caught my attention. They all have great and unique dishes :)
Other than food festival, this event also had workshop, competition and meet & greet with famous foodies.
I must say, this year Jakarta Culinary Passport was a BIG SUCCESS! Thank you The Alphabet Project for organizing such a great event :).
Here, some more moments captured in Jakarta Culinary Passport :

This is the end of the my post about Jakarta Culinary Passport 2.0, hope you enjoy and see you on the next post!
